ATU's
(Aerobic
Treatment
Units) are
alternative
septic
systems
that inject
air throughout
the tank
to produce
aerobic
bacteria
to breakdown
the waste
in the
wastewater.
These
aerobic
bacteria
are much
more
efficient
at cleaning
up the
water
than conventional
septic
systems
that use
anaerobic
bacteria
to do
the
job.
ATU's
don't
have
to
use drainfield
distribution
of the
wastewater,
but instead
can
use
drip
irrigation
type tubes
that do
not need
to be
very
deep to
be effective.
This can
save
many
homeowners
from having
high mounds
in their
yards
because
of high
groundwater.
They use
pumps
to
distribute
the wastewater
through
the tubing
which
can
snake
around
trees,
shrubs
and anything
else in
the yard.
These
tubes
cannot
be
infiltrated
by root
systems
so this
also saves
many homeowners
from having
to adjust
their
landscaping
because
of having
to replace
their
septic
system.
